Why EBC was such a superb place to be I first thought was because they were slightly short of numbers, so they welcome people whatever they are and meet them (metaphorically) where they are.But it goes deeper. They would rather you were a happy atheist than a sad one; they really do care about people.And they aren't that short of numbers though they welcome people as if they were. I was welcomed to every event and in every way even though I made it clear I would only be in the area 7 more months.The theology is non Fundamentalist and robust and it works, the minister is hard working and shockingly intelligent, but you have to get to know all of the people there as most have a special ability in one area or another. Find the one who after her 80th birthday went on a large sailing ship and spent a lot of the time up the tallest mast as a look out. Do you know how much those ships lean? Sure there's a chair to get up and down, but would you want to try it when the wind is blowing and the ship moving up and down and rocking in the waves? And there's a very capable physicist who knows, as well as everything else, some of the finer details of the PC you use, how it runs both CISC and RISC for example.All three Eynsham churches share some activities and for a number of decades now members have spent the odd Sunday at one of the other Eynsham churches or somewhere else entirely. I was always seriously short of time so often wanted to attend just the coffee afterward, but I like to sing and I like to be challenged and encouraged by the sermon, so in fact hardly a minute was wasted the whole time I was there. Like movies and TV shows it gets better as you get more familiar with the characters, so 7 months on it was the main reason I would have stayed in the area if I had had the choice.
